When this setting is enabled, the quote or job will recalculate as you tab from field to field and make changes.

If the setting is disabled, any changes made to the quote are not automatically calculated and you will need to manually trigger a recalc or refresh.

The setting is useful only on older versions of Dolphin, and where the PC or server is a little older and slower than optimal, because when the hardware is not optimal, a recalc of a quote can take a couple of seconds.

Our recommendation is that it should always be enabled, unless your hardware and network settings are a little on the slow side, and you prefer to get through the quote first in one go, and then calc everything to see the result. .

The setting works per user - so individual users can choose to enable or disable it as per their preferences without affecting any other user in the company.

This is how to enable or disable it .

In the Estimating module, on the Calculate Button, select the drop down to the right of the calculator image to expand the drop down menu

Make sure that the Auto Calc option has a tick next to it ( as indicated in the image above) if you want the setting enabled.

To disable it , click on it and remove the tick

The short answer is the pre-trim is already included in the Guillotine Setup - here's some pictures and a bit more detail to help with understanding how to setup your guillotine or trims so you can get the costing you want.

Lets review some of the Guillotine setups first :

The Guillotine Setup

On the Guillo setup , you can specify the following

C/hr = Cost per hour

Min Cost = Minimum cost to charge per job

Cuts/hr = Cuts per hour

MR Time = Overall Make ready Time

MR Time Work Cuts = Specific make ready time for cutting a work sheets

MR Time Stock Cuts = Specific make ready time for cutting a stock sheets

The Cut Sheet Table
This is a lookup table which specifies the number of single or double cuts for the number up on your job.

It's nothing really complicated, and pretty standard, you shouldn't really be messing with this one unless someone accidentally deleted something and you need to fix it.

Cut Sheet Table

The Trims Table

This lookup table specifies the number of cuts to trim down a stock sheet based on the number out of the job

Trims Lookup Table

The Stack Sheet Table

Now we get to the good stuff. This is the table where you will capture the specs for your guillotine and enter the number of sheets your guillotine can cut in a single pile, per gsm.

Stack Sheets per GSM

How does this all work together?

When you add the guillotine to your quote , Dolphin will automatically calculate the cost based on the total cuts that are determined to be required for this job.

The total cuts are include both the trims of the stock sheet and the cuts of the worksheet.

In all cases , an external IT vendor has contradicted our advice and recommendations, and some clients have ended up with a slower system as result.

Here is a plain English explanation of what you need to tell your IT provider so that they understand why they cannot recommend a lower spec machine than the one we recommend.

Dolphin is a multi-threaded application.

We have been told that some of the IT vendors will tell you that they have checked, and it's a single threaded application.

They are wrong, for 2 main reasons.

1) They are not the developers of the program, and they really have no idea how the engine works.

2) Dolphin is designed to produce vastly complex quotes and calculations as quickly as possible - so we fire in multiple queries across a multiple threads whenever we need to, to accomplish the fastest result possible.

If you are looking to replace your hardware - please speak to us about the minimum requirements for Dolphin, as well as the optimal hardware setups required for both your server and your client machines.

Please don't buy anything until your IT vendor has been put in touch with us to get a more realistic explanation of what hardware you will need.

You wouldn't put second rate spare parts in your car, so why take the chance with fundamental equipment required to run your business ? Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6561508291065145447.post-3240819784563570602015-02-09T13:39:00.000+11:002015-02-09T13:39:00.558+11:00wild card searches in Dolphin 4Did you know you can do a wildcard search on the grids in dolphin ?

What it really means is you can search for things that contain the letters or part of the word you remember about a clients name , or address , or contact name.

Here's how it works

First up a quick review of the results you'll get from a standard search :

Typing 'Mat into the client search brings up all clients where the name starts with 'Mat'

A wild card search , where you enter '%Mat' into the client search will bring up additional results where the name contains the letters 'Mat'

In some regions, we also have a thriving ecosystem of add-ons, created by our Distributors, each add-on fills a niche for a specific set of functionality which is required on top of the core software.

This is a wonderful way to provide as much specific functionality across a range of different client needs without the core software being constantly changed.

It can sometimes however lead to a bit of confusion as the distinction between a core module and an add-on becomes blurred, particularly when something goes wrong at a technical level, you may not know who is responsible for fixing whatever is broken.

The core modules of Dolphin MIS are

Estimating
Production
CRM
Tracking
Planning
Reports
Integration

You can read all about them on our website on the Dolphin 4 page

Integration is the newest of our modules, we have no clients using it currently. It is however a fantastic option for clients who run a separate web to print system and need their jobs to feed into the software automatically , calculate and go to the factory floor for planning.

Our Distributors also provide a number of addons ; these include sync's to various accounting packages , email functions to automatically send out emails , and a host of other nifty functions that can be bolted onto the core system.

Your licensing for the core modules gives you the following

Free upgrades
Telephone/ email support from your distributor
Troubleshooting support for issues affecting the core modules

Your licensing on the core modules does not cover the functionality of the addons however, which are separately licensed or sold by the Distributors where they are available.

If an add on is not working, and the distributor cannot fix it themselves , or work is required in the core software for the add on to function, this work is considered a customisation request by us here at Dolphin HQ , and the time is billable back to the Distributor as a consulting rate by our team of developers.

Your Distributor may pass on a portion, or the whole of this cost to you, it would be incumbent upon you to request a breakdown of any billing for additional work , or support provided by the distibutor where you are using an add on that is not listed above as a core module of Dolphin MIS

Pricing for Dolphin MIS Modules is set to change as from 1 October 2014 in the Australasia / Pacific Region.

This would be the first significant change to the monthly licensing fees in 2 years, with a negligible increase on only 2 modules in October 2013, and a minor increase in October 2012.

The total impact will depend on the make up of your monthly license, and how many modules have licensed.

The RRP will go up by $1 (AUD) per full priced license, and 50c per discounted license. Floating Licenses and any clients with alternate Price Agreements will be impacted differently and should look out for specific communications in regards to the new license amounts from their distributors.

Your Distributor will have more information on how this will affect you.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6561508291065145447.post-19918093972850037332014-08-23T19:30:00.000+10:002014-08-27T15:09:30.177+10:00How to Access the Planning Module In our latest BETA v 4.481.34.171, there is a new button on the home menu

This button opens the planning module.

Even though we have always licensed planning as a seperate module, it was only accessible through production, and therefore could only be licensed to production users

Our new version functionally separates the 2 modules, so that they can be accessed by different users.

As from our new BETA version ( 4.481.34.171) and up , the planning module can be accessed from the Home Menu as follows :

On the Main Home tab, and using the small pencil icon on the QuickLinks bar above

days.

The truth is, there are many 'final countdowns' each and every day. A final countdown to a Job being due, or a final countdown to a new client.

Today however marks the last week or so of XP and Office 2003 Support from Microsoft.

What does this mean for our clients ?

If you're already upgraded to another OS or Office version, then you are not affected at all. We removed XP from our list of minimum requirements in April 2013 in preparation for this loss of support from Microsoft.

If you're still running XP, then the biggest impact is going to be the fact that Microsoft will no longer release security updates for XP.

It's not advisable to remain on XP for long after the support has ended, this is mainly because that risk of vulnerability does exist. And it can be exploited. And choosing to stay on XP really isn't good in the long run for your business.

So here's a reminder that the countdown has begun with little over a week to go. Please contact your IT support , or provider and make sure you get all the necessary information for upgrading your OS.

And just for kicks , here's some cello's to play you out , with The Final Countdown.
The license for Dolphin 4 software is downloaded and checked on a daily basis.

This requires access to the internet for a small piece of software called the Dolphin RegServer.

Once a license cannot be checked, the software will continue to work for a maximum of 7 days , and thereafter access to the site will need to be restored for the license information to be verified.

If you company has a firewall, and your IT department is managing and allowing specific access through a proxy, then it may be necessary to manually enter the proxy settings.

This is something that should be done by your local Distributor and Support office.

Make sure your IT support provider , or department are aware of this requirement if they are planning on changing , or have recently changed your proxy settings or firewall settings.

You can refresh the entire document list, or you can just refresh the details for the quote or job you are have focus on .

This is how

To refresh the entire list of quotes and jobs look for the refresh button on the bottom of the grid - and click on it

If you click on this refresh button, your list of quotes and jobs will be updated with all the new jobs and quotes that have been created since you opened the estimating screen, or since you last clicked the refresh button.

To refresh only the details of the job you are currently looking at - make sure you are on the quote or job that you want to refresh, and click on the button at the top of the estimating screen ( next to the big green plus button which creates a new Quote )

Why are there 2 buttons?

The main reason for seperating out these actions is for speed. When your system has hundreds of quotes and jobs, it is much much faster to simply refresh the individual details , or the header information in the list , rather than do a massive refresh of all the possible in the system.
It's also important for us to make it clear to all clients, that the development and management team do not have any financial incentive to force an upgrade. There are no costs or charges associated with providing updated software to the Distributors, and your licensing is not affected or increased by moving to a newer version. The older versions have reached the end of their shelf-life , and the newer versions are more stable, with many bug fixes and newer features.

We have never in the last 20 years since Dolphin was founded, forced any client to upgrade, as we believe that the improvements to the software should speak for themselves. This change to our policy is not about making money, and it is not about getting more money from clients, because we don't charge any fees for the upgraded software.

We do not charge for upgrades, and our distributors receive all software upgrades at no cost to them.

Unfortunately , we have reached a position where a small number of clients are working on versions of the software that cannot be maintained and supported.

If you are happy to have the upgrade done and tested remotely, without a consultant coming to your premises, then there is no reason that you cannot ask for a free, or substantially reduced upgrade fee when speaking with our Distributors.

The following versions of Dolphin4 Software will no longer be supported or licensed from 1 October 2013.

4.218.31.17

4.218.31.20

4.218.34.21

4.297.32.85

4.373.33.29

4.378.34.35

We will also not be supporting or licensing any versions older than these.

If you don't know how to check which version you are on, we have a previous post that explains where to look in Dolphin to see the version number.

This does not affect any of our other clients who are already working on newer versions of the software.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6561508291065145447.post-20453088260985914272013-04-16T08:29:00.000+10:002013-04-16T08:29:57.500+10:00Windows XP and Dolphin4 - an update to our minimum OS requirements Windows XP will no longer be supported by Microsoft from 8 April 2014.

In preparation for this change , we have removed Windows XP from our list of supported Operating Systems, as from 8 April 2013.

This is exactly a year ahead of when Microsoft will no longer support the product.

We have been asked why we are ceasing support so far in advance , our reasons are explained below.

The first reason has to do with the new sales we achieve during this year

We would like all our new clients who may have machines with XP running, to be fully aware not only of the loss of support from Microsoft, but also, that if they are evaluating Dolphin 4, they also need to consider upgrading their OS ahead of the Microsoft cut off date.

We believe in being ahead of the curve ball, and we trust that by being pro-active it will save a lot of headaches for our new clients in the long run.

The second reason has to do with the impact on our existing clients.

Approximately 30% of our current clients are using Windows XP either on the server machine , or on the individual user's PC's that work in Dolphin4.

We have found that it can take anything from a few weeks to a few months for a company to evaluate and decide on a new operating system, and implement and upgrade the server and user machines. This is particularly the case for clients where the server machine is not a dedicated server, as it usually cannot simply be upgraded , and there is a long process to replace the operating system and other software.

We would like our clients to have a full year to evaluate and choose an alternative product before Microsoft stops supporting XP, and to be ahead of the change.

Continuing to use XP after Microsoft cuts off support could expose your business to an unacceptable security risk. Any loopholes or flaws that are as yet undiscovered would pose a risk to your business, as they would never be fixed if discovered after 8 April 2014.

Operating Systems that are supported :
